How LED Lights Work

The LED light bulb is known as an unsung hero in the world of lighting solutions. They feature in everything from digital locks, remote controls, watches and microwaves, and when grouped together they can create vast television screens and traffic lights. More recently they have been used in traditional light bulbs as a more energy-efficient way of lighting homes and businesses. Their eco-friendly credentials mean that they reduce power consumption whilst providing a brighter and more consistent light than their incandescent counterparts. This guide outlines exactly how the LED light bulb operates and why this is so effective for so many purposes throughout the home.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are essentially very small light bulbs which fit easily into electrical circuits. They function entirely as a result of the movement of electrons in a semi-conductor material, which means they can easily surpass the life span of an incandescent bulb, which will work until the filament burns out. A diode is the simplest form of semi-conductor. It is a material which has varying ability to conduct electrical current. Semi-conductors which have abundant electrons are called N-type material; in this sort of conductor, free electrons move from a negatively charged are to one with a positive charge. P-type semi-conductors have extra holes in their make-up, and the extra positively charged particles it possesses can jump from one hole to another, effectively moving from a positively charged area to a negatively charged one. Diodes are a mix between N-type and P-type materials.

The interaction that is caused as a result of the electrons jumping between holes from negative to positive charges (and vice versa) creates light, and a viable lighting solution for homes and businesses. The process also emits significantly less heat than incandescent bulbs, which gives off light as a result of heating the filament to a high temperature.

LED light bulbs can be altered to vary the colour of the light. By changing the distance which the electrons have to leap, the colour of the light is altered. This is more useful in the red or green lights on alarm clocks, but with visible LEDs growing in popularity, there are steps being made to create the diodes that are infrared, ultraviolet and all of the colours of the spectrum in between.

The biggest problem currently faced by manufacturers creating LEDs for public use is the upfront costs. Currently, energy-efficient LEDs can cost around three times as much as a traditional incandescent bulb, but the life span and electricity savings that are facilitated by the energy-efficient lighting source mean that money is eventually saved in the long run. If customers are replacing bulbs for many fixtures at the same time, the initial outlay can be costly, but with LED production increasing and improving all the time, affordability will be one of the key areas they target in the future.

Business Benefits of Switching to LED Light Bulbs

The switch from incandescent light bulbs to more energy-efficient alternatives is almost upon us, with different wattages slowly being phased out in favour of newer bulbs which convert energy into illumination more efficiently. If they haven’t already, many businesses will soon need to make the change from conventional halogen bulbs, which are wasteful and short-lived, to the more modern energy-efficient alternatives. As the stocks of incandescent light bulbs begin to fall with the bans on production coming into play, companies will need to choose the best way to illuminate their working environment in the most budget-friendly and effective way possible. LED Light Bulbs are generally considered to be the best energy-saving lighting solution on the market, and BLT Direct has a huge range to choose from to fully equip any business for the impending light bulb switchover.

BLT Direct, with their vast experience of providing lighting solutions for both commercial and domestic customers, understand the business benefits of changing from high-energy incandescent bulbs to the modern LED alternatives. The manufacturers of these bulbs also understand that business owners will be looking for ways to implement these new bulbs into their workplace without too much disturbance, which is why they come in many shapes and sizes, with bases that will fit a huge variety of existing fittings and fixtures.

Bulbs such as the LED GU10 5-Watt Warm White Light Bulb are a great alternative to the older halogen bulbs, for a variety of reasons. The wasteful heat energy that the less technologically advanced bulbs became so famous for is all but completely eliminated, and the short lifespans of just a few years have been extended to around 30,000 hours – if used for just 6 hours per day, they would last for over 16 years. They can be used in any fixture which accepts the popular 2-pin base, and the selection of attractive colour temperatures, including ‘warm white’ and ‘daylight’ are perfect for illuminating a shop floor, warehouse stockroom, an office and a whole manner of other workplace environments.

Commercial surroundings such as hotel lobbies, restaurants, shop floors or showrooms often rely on lighting to create the atmosphere that owners hope will be attractive to customers. BLT Direct’s range of LED G4 Capsule Lamps is perfect for accent lighting and down lighting, drawing attention to certain products or creating a specific ambience. One of the many business benefits of switching to these bulbs is the fact that, because of their incredibly long lifespan, they can be placed in awkward or difficult-to-reach places without the need to be replaced every few years. Replacing light bulbs can add up to enormous maintenance costs, and LED lamps are all about saving money whilst protecting the environment. The transition from weary halogen to dazzlingly high lumens is made simple and easy with these bulbs; they come with a variety of popular bases and are available in warm, welcoming colour temperatures to create an inviting and appealing atmosphere in an environment where customer satisfaction matters.

Long-Lasting Lighting Solutions from BLT Direct

An extraordinary light bulb in Livermore, California has purportedly been continuously glowing for more than 110 years. The hand-made bulb was created in 1897 and was given to the local fire station by a businessman four years later in 1901. Only when Livermore was subject to a power cut has the bulb been dimmed, as well as the fire service’s 1976 move to a new building. The bulb’s low-wattage is believed to have contributed to the incredibly long life span, but nobody can quite explain how the century-old bulb has lasted quite so long.

Whilst BLT Direct, a UK provider of light bulbs and lighting solutions, cannot guarantee that any of their products will see out the century without breaking a sweat, they certainly have a fantastic range of energy-saving light bulbs that can last a lifetime. With GU10, GLS, LED lights and other more obscure types of bulb all available from BLT, there is a lighting solution for every purpose.

The low-energy GU10 bulbs are considered to be a direct substitute for the recently outlawed halogen bulbs traditionally used by many. The LED versions of these bulbs have an even longer life span, with the LED GU10 Cluster 1.8-Watt boasting a reputed lamp life of 30,000 hours. Available in a flattering warm-white shade and with an energy-efficiency rating of ‘A’, these bulbs are a worthy investment in the search for a long-lasting lighting solution.

A Guide To Common Bulb Bases

Choosing a bulb for a light fixture can be tricky business; there are so many different wattages and colours, with varying sizes to choose from. One of the most confusing aspects of choosing light bulbs can be getting the base right; every DIY expert has, at some point or another, managed to find him or herself with the wrong bulb to match a fixture. BLT Direct, one of the UK's leading suppliers of lighting solutions, have a huge selection of light bulbs with many different types of base; here are the five most popular bases they stock.

The bayonet cap is probably the most familiar light bulb to the majority of customers, with it's familiar shape and the easy-to-follow 'push then twist' action used to connect it to the light fixture. They come in two sizes, 22mm and 15mm, and they are most commonly used for mains voltage lamps. There are occasionally some variants, such as the 3-pin bayonet cap, but for standard household fittings the basic bayonet cap, known as a 'BC', will suffice. This Box Of 10 GLS 60-watt Pearl bulbs are a very common and standard bulb with a bayonet cap, created to fit a variety of applications and available at BLT Direct for just £10.49.

Another of the most well-known light bulb bases is the Edison screw, named after the inventor Thomas Edison who was credited with creating the electric light bulb as we know it today. There are many different sizes of Edison screw base so it is worth checking any fixtures for the exact measurement before purchasing. As in the name, the Edison base screws into place and are usually used in domestic settings. They are used the world over, and the fact that the base comes in many different sizes means that it is versatile and adaptable. Also available in a standard shape and a 'warm white' shade, BLT Direct has a Box Of 10 Energy Saving GLS light bulbs which come with the Edison screw base and are available for £11.99.

GU10 bulbs are coming into prominence with the slow phasing-out of halogen bulbs; it is important to know which sort of fixtures these bulbs will fit. They are seen as like-for-like replacements for their outlawed halogen cousins, with more energy-saving capabilities and a longer life. The GU10 bulbs are generally twist and lock bulbs, similar to bayonet caps, and will generally fit many domestic fixtures such as desk or ceiling lamps. Single GU10 Energy-Saving 11-watt light bulb are available in wonderful daylight colours from just £4.99 at BLT Direct.

Cut Energy Costs This Winter With BLT Direct

After a brief Indian summer where Britain spent a week walking around in flip-flops and sunglasses, the UK has finally succumbed to it's trademark cold winter. With the onset of wind, rain and even some snow forecast, temperatures have dropped dramatically within the last few weeks and residents of freezing Britain will be turning up the heating for the first time in months. Not only is the meteorological climate dropping, but the economic climate is facing tough times, with energy providers driving prices sky-high and making it more expensive than ever for people to heat their homes through winter.

BLT Direct, a leading UK supplier of light bulbs, is offering the perfect method of saving money and to even out the energy bills. Their range of energy-saving lightbulbs come in all shapes and sizes, at a budget price to suit everybody. Energy-saving bulbs have dramatically reduced running costs, consuming much less power and resulting in lower electricity bills. Don’t Pay Over The Odds for Energy Saving Light Bulbs

Transport for London is paying anything from £100 to £1000 to change a lightbulb, each time one of their four million London Underground bulbs needs swapping. These figures, revealed by energy consultancy, Active Energy earlier this month shed light on just how much money is wasted by big businesses. An estimated £12 of the total cost is for the light bulb itself, with the rest of the bill being made up of logistics requirements such as site preparation and health and safety checks. In total, it is though that £400 million - £4 billion pounds per year is spent on the changing of light bulbs by the transport network.

These figures highlight just how easy it is to let energy costs escalate, confirms BLT Direct, suppliers of great value energy saving lightbulbs and lamps. The online retailer stocks a huge range of energy saving bulbs such as GU10 and LED light bulbs, all of which cost considerably less than the amounts being spent by Transport for London.

Suitable for use in the home and workplace, the BLT Direct website contains a handy wattage estimator, which helps those making the change from old style incandescent bulbs to an energy friendly alternative pick the correct product for existing fittings and fixtures.

A web site section dedicated to energy saving lighting also contains helpful hints about saving money on energy bills. It gives energy saving comparisons and a library of information about lighting, light bulbs and light fittings.

The site also makes it easy for businesses and homes to keep energy saving lightbulb costs down with a choice of brand name bulbs and special offers. The Energy Saving GU10 7 Watt (Daylight - 6500K) bulb is just one example, priced at £4.99 (reduced from £9.99). Other reductions include the Energy Saving Mini 9 watt PLEQ Lamp BC, reduced from £6.90 to £4.26.

Unlike the Blackpool Illuminations, your Christmas lights might not be getting switched on by Robbie Williams, but that doesn't mean they can't be really special!

Getting organised early on for Christmas is something that really does pay off, removing a lot of the stress often associated with festive preparations and allowing you to relax and enjoy yourself at such a special time of year. The Icicle Christmas lights are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Remote controlled they offer a choice of eight pulsating settings and one static setting. Lit by LED light bulbs, the Icicle Christmas lights benefit from the long life features of low energy bulbs but have the brightness and vibrancy often associated with the traditional incandescent bulb.

Christmas fairy lights are undoubtedly top of any festive lighting list; choose from two lengths and various colour combinations. BLT Direct’s fairy lights also make use of LED technology. Their long-life bulbs mean they can be stored away after Christmas and re-used next year or, dusted off for a special occasion such as a wedding or party at any time.

Ensure Christmas Light Safety This Season with BLT Direct

The excitement surrounding the Christmas holidays mounts up when it’s time to purchase the tree, fairy lights and outdoor Christmas lights to decorate the home. Light bulb and projector lamp experts BLT Direct have a selection of Christmas lights that not only light up your home, but don’t bite too far into the Christmas budget.

Safety is important, and BLT Direct explains how Christmas lights can still be fun and decorative whilst being safe. Electricity expert Steven Ellwood, director of BLT Direct stresses the importance of using tested and approved Christmas lights, “legitimate Christmas lights should carry the certified lab logo, and all the LED Christmas lights from BLT Direct are lab approved and carry the correct labelling If something should go wrong, a certified manufacturer will be able to fix any Christmas light issues without endangering anyone who works with and uses fairy lights”.

Light bulbs don’t last forever, and should a bulb blow within a stream of Christmas lights, they should be replaced immediately with a bulb of the same wattage before the lights are used again. Attempting to install a new fairy light bulb whilst they are in use is very dangerous and can have devastating effects, if several light bulbs are faulty within a line of Christmas lights, it is recommended to purchase new fairy lights as it could be a connection fault. “Consumers should never use fairy lights that may have connection problems, if you suspect a connection problem with any stream of fairy lights, simply throw them away, do not attempt to fix them yourself.”

Those decorating both inside and outside the house this year should also make sure that the correct type of Christmas lights are used. Christmas light packaging should clearly state whether they are for indoor or outdoor use, the outdoor Christmas lights from BLT Direct are tougher than indoor lights, and come with a longer electrical cord for convenience.

BLT Direct also stocks the innovative solar powered Christmas lights. The LED twinkle lights are controlled via a remote- making the use of these particular fair lights much safer. “The innovative solar power system makes these the greener Christmas lights” explains Steven “During the Christmas period, electricity bills can soar and many households waste energy by not turning their Christmas lights off, the solar solution offers an energy saving alternative and a fantastic price without cutting any safety corners!”.

Christmas Lights; A History with BLT Direct

BLT Direct is one of the UK’s leading retailers in decorative, sparkling Christmas lights, but have you ever wondered how the idea of fairy lights become a long standing holiday tradition? Way back in 1880 when Thomas Edison was fiddling with wires to create light bulbs, the stranded fairy lights were chosen to decorate the outside of his laboratory.

Initially, candles were used as decoration upon the traditional Christmas tree and fireplace, over one hundred years later however Christmas lights are strewn across lawns and roofs with many residential areas competing over the finest and most vibrant display of electricity. Whilst candles were the source of delicate and soft illumination, they lack the practicality that comes with the innovative light bulb. Thomas Edison’s partner Edward Johnson was the first to create a string of Christmas tree lights in 1882, hand wiring 80 coloured light bulbs; Johnson literally electrified the Christmas tree!

It wasn’t until 1903 however that Christmas lights became a family tradition, before the turn of the century electricity was reserved for only the wealthy and after 1903 pre-assembled kits were sold to everyone to decorate their homes in time for the holidays. It took another 17 years for the multi-coloured strings of light bulbs to become a fully commercial business; Albert Sadacca was a founder of (National Outfit Manufacturers Association) NOMA Electric Co. Who were pioneers in the Christmas lights market up until the 1960s.

Fifty years later, every company, business and service cashes in on Christmas and Christmas lights. BLT Direct not only offers an ample selection of Christmas lights and fairy lights in their online catalogue, the established light bulb experts provide some of the most competitive prices on the market. Whether they are to decorate the tree, the roof or even the car, BLT Direct has the Christmas lights for you.
