As the season for alfresco living is set to make its comeback and sun worshippers everywhere gear up for weekends spent lazing in the sun, the stylish and bang on trend are spending their summer nights dining outside under this season’s hottest range of garden lights.
Steve Ellwood, Managing Director of BLT Direct, the leading suppliers of light bulbs, light fittings and low energy light bulbs, said, “One of the most popular garden lighting products this season so far is certainly our Mini LED Spike Lights, which feature marine grade stainless steel construction, and contain a Luxeon high power LED.
“It is essential that whether you are using lighting for inside or outdoors that you use energy saving light bulbs or alternatives to the traditional lamp. Our Mini LED Spike Lights boast low running costs, easy installation, and energy efficiency. These lamps enhance and highlight specific architectural features and make the house more inviting to guests.”
Garden lighting is not only a cost-effective way to cast the lawn and its surrounds in a pretty, flattering light it also works to extend the hours you can enjoy the fresh air and British summer with family and friends.
For the summer savvy, lighting can take many forms this season, from lamps and lanterns to wall mounted lights, shedding a little light on the latest barbequed delicacy to land on your plate, and having strategically placed lighting around seating areas means that you can stay out until all hours, enjoying a glass of wine, chatting and socialising with friends.
Modern garden lighting can also be used for security purposes, with police warning us all that burglars will often make up their mind to target a property from across the road. If your property is lit then generally a burglar will look for a softer option.
Mr Ellwood from the firm who advise all of their customers to invest in energy efficient light bulbs, said, “Whether you go for security lights, spotlights or garden spike lights, you should always try to purchase energy efficient alternatives, as these will cut your electricity costs and reduce your carbon footprint.

Bring The Indoors Outside This Summer With Stylish Garden Lighting!
Energy Efficient Hospital Lighting: Now That’s A Bright Idea
Hospital lighting during the medieval era left a lot to be desired, debating aside, we would all agree that the old-fashioned scalpel and unreliable candle light are not a match made in heaven! Thankfully for us all, Thomas Edison changed things for the better and there began a trend for hospitals and the industry more generally, seeking out revolutionary light fittings that were both bright enough for intricate work whilst boasting energy saving capabilities.
Steve Ellwood, Managing Director of BLT Direct, one of the leading providers of energy saving light bulbs, halogen light bulbs and mercury lamps, said, “Hospital executives are faced with an extremely difficult decision when it comes to selecting energy saving solutions for the hospital environment. There are so many light fittings and energy saving bulbs on the market and this means that selecting the right one inevitably depends on whether or not it is purpose specific.”
With NHS budgets under close inspection, especially in the chancellor’s yearly budget, hospital chief executives and indeed the Government are finding ways to cut costs without compromising on their standards of care. One of the most obvious ways for many to achieve this is by joining the energy saving revolution and investing in one of the many environmentally friendly lighting products that have saturated the market in recent times.
Mr Ellwood added, “Halogen light bulbs are often the preferred method of lighting, as they give off a clean crisp light inside the examination room or operating theatre. It is essential that whatever solution is chosen, that no shadow is created on the patient, as costly mistakes could become a reality. One of the most important areas requiring purpose specific lighting is in fact the dermatologist’s examination room. A rash or skin infection may look like one thing in natural light, but in fact be something very different when placed under a lighted magnifier.”
In recent months, many of the countries public buildings have taken a stand by reducing their carbon footprint and making their buildings more energy efficient, it is high time that hospitals joined the cause. New hospitals are being constructed, and existing ones are being renovated from the ground up to provide better services to a much wider audience. Despite popular belief, incorporating green light fittings, lamps and controls to a ward, is certainly not an expensive way of doing things, reducing bills in the long term.
Mr Ellwood added, “We are all living in very forward-thinking times and protecting the environment for future generations has become very topical recently. We should all try to do out bit and conserve the energy we use and that should apply to huge buildings like healthcare centres and hospitals.”

Minimising Pollution, Minimising Bills
The Government is working to phase out the use of standard bulbs as part of its commitment to reducing CO2, and as such we are all being encouraged to switch to energy saving light bulbs. While changing the light bulbs in your home involves very little effort or expense the majority of people are posing the following question in response to the Government’s calls – why should we bother?
Putting green guilt and carbon footprints to one side, switching to more energy efficient bulbs, such as LED lightbulbs, will reduce your monthly energy bill. This therefore means that sticking to standard, inefficient light bulbs is not only bad for the planet, but its bad for your wallet too.
BLT Direct is one of the leading suppliers of lighting solutions and they stock a huge range of low energy, energy efficient and daylight energy saving light bulbs. These long life lightbulbs help to reduce running costs with an extended lamp life of up to 15,000 hours. Their LED light bulbs are an affordable and energy efficient lighting solution and are available in a wide range of styles and sizes.
BLT Direct is committed to providing environmentally friendly lighting solutions which are guaranteed to help you reduce your monthly bills and help save the planet. In addition to their wide range of low energy light bulbs they stock all kinds of other light bulbs and lighting solutions including specialist lamps, light fittings, ultra violet lamps, fluorescent tubes and lighting control gear.

BLT Up The Ante On Green Office Credentials
Steve Ellwood, Managing Director of BLT Direct, who are championing the use of energy saving lightbulbs and halogen lightbulbs, in the workplace said, “Conserving energy is not only a global issue, but businesses seem unaware of how much money they could be saving, through something as simple as purchasing a new light fitting or bulb.”
Recent figures released by the Carbon Trust, show that businesses account for 40 per-cent of the UK’s annual carbon emissions, which is in turn costing businesses an estimated £2 billion. In light of the recent economic downturn, this is one expense we could all do without, so it makes sense to not only invest in the future of younger generations, but to find ways of reducing the impact this is having on businesses across the UK.
Findings from the Carbon Trust indicated that 67 per-cent of workers are willing to contribute towards reducing their company’s carbon footprint, but they are unsure of how to go about it. What’s even more disturbing, however is that only 18 per-cent of workers felt that their businesses are actively reducing their carbon footprint.
Mr Ellwood added, “Bringing greener habits into the workplace is an essential part of tackling climate change, especially as a significant proportion of CO2 emissions come from businesses. Encouraging your workers to bring their green attitudes into the workplace, maybe by using a brainstorming session, could be a great way to achieve environmental harmony. It is important that every business makes a conscious effort to help the environment.”
If you replace the traditional light bulb with 0.7W energy saving light bulb, which has the equivalent normal wattage of 10W and ran it for a day, you would save £12.22 annually. This may be a small change, but in the long-term if you replace all of your bulbs throughout the house, you could easily up to £100 every year, if not more!
The Carbon Trust is able to provide any business with energy saving guides and resources on issues ranging from educating your staff on energy saving, posters to remind staff to turn the lights off and general overviews emphasising where most of the energy is wasted in the business environment. There are even resources focussing on reducing such problems such as purchasing energy saving fittings and energy saving lightbulbs.
Mr Ellwood added, “We invite all of our customers to call us for energy saving hints and tips and any questions that they may have with regards to purchasing energy saving lightbulbs. If we can cut the carbon emissions of just a few businesses, we will be extremely happy. Generating an awareness around this very important subject makes the whole project extremely worthwhile.”
