How Many Politicians Does It Take To Change A Light Bulb?

How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? Well, 27 if you count the number of the European member states that are to outline proposals for phasing out the traditional incandescent light bulb over the next 2 years. The 490 million citizens of the 27 member states will be expected to switch to energy-efficient bulbs, in a move that could save the public up to £5.4 billion a year in fuel bills and also about 20 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year. The energy that would be saved in the UK is equivalent to one medium-sized power station.

Change can be confusing, as those who are old enough to remember the demise of the faithful tanners, bobs and half-crowns for the now familiar pounds and pence will know. There are often no initiatives to help the general public to adjust to these dramatic changes, and the same can be said for the move from the traditional light bulb to the more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. With many people unsure what energy saving equivalent to buy.

Thankfully the UK's leading light bulb supplier BLT Direct are way ahead of the game. By simply visiting http://www.bltdirect.com/ you can still purchase your traditional light bulbs, but as you make your selection, BLT Directs revolutionary website will let you know what energy efficient alternatives are available at unbeatable prices. With savings of up to 64% off energy saving light bulbs and free delivery direct to your door with orders over £35, becoming Eco friendly needn't cost the Earth.

It has long been known that traditional light bulbs waste a lot of energy, with 95% of the energy generating heat instead of light, but we have a lot to thank Thomas Edison for the marvel of the light bulb, and since it has changed very little since its inception, it is a fond farewell as its energy saving equivalent takes the baton, and leads us into climate friendly future.

Not only does this use less energy but it means the light bulbs are cool to the touch.

Pick from a choice of red, blue, green or yellow, these coloured LED light bulbs last up to 50 times longer than standard versions and give a saving of approximately £500 over the bulbs lifetime. Available in a range of wattage's, prices start from £7.99 plus VAT.

Metal Halide Information

High pressure discharge lamps or to be precise metal halide lamps combine an enormous amount of light with excellent colour rendering and use an arc instead of a filament. If you compare this type of lamp to a conventional incandescent lamp (GLS) where light is generated through resistance heating of a filament and most of the electrical energy is converted to heat instead of light, the metal halide lamp generates light by passing an electrical current from one electrode to another through a metal vapour to form an arc between the electrodes.

Metal Halide lamps give out more lumens per watt and also give long life. As they have no filament to burn out and will last an average of 6000 hours or two years which is six time the life of an incandescent lamp. This is increased to 9000 hours or three years if used with electronic control gear.

A change in the lamp and ballast construction allows pulse start metal halide lamps to start using a high voltage ignitor in the ballast instead of a starting electrobe (probe) in the lamp. The result is a "white light" system that challenges high pressure sodium's long lamp life, high lumen output and quick start capabilities. This can produce metal halide lamps with 20,000 hours of life or longer.

Megaman have now produced a substitute for metal halide and mercury tungsten blended lamps.
The MEGAMAN® CLUSTERLITE produces formidable illumination with exceptional high lumen maintenance, making it the perfect substitute for metal halide and mercury tungsten blended lamps. With various wattages for you to choose from, the CLUSTERLITE series caters for various commercial and industrial applications with a menu of advantages

LED GU10 Technology Latest

One of the most popular light bulb in recent years has been the halogen GU10 originally made by Sylvania. This lamp came on to the market as a genuine replacement for the low voltage dichroic halogen lamp about twelve years ago. Up until that time downlighters required the dichroic lamp and transformer arrangement which was costly, the GU10 was a 240 volt replacement which lasted around 2500 hours and provided a stable halogen light source for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and commercial display applications. Hundreds of thousands of these are fitted around the UK and until the recent energy saving push were eating electricity by the kilowatt.

The release of the compact fluorescent version started the ball rolling and it wasn't long before a 50 watt equivalent was available using only 11 watts. The development in LED technology has been a little slower however a lamp has been available that is approaching 40 watts but these lamps were still very expensive.

A recent launch of the Envirolight LED GU10 is making an impact on the market this lamp only uses 2.3 watts of electricity and is very reasonably priced at £9.95 + VAT. This lamp has a rated lamp life of 25 years based on 3 hours usage per day. Also this lamp will give you savings of over 90% on electricity running costs.
